Litho or Lithography was invented by Alois Senefelder in 1796 and is the process of printing from a flat surface (or plate) which has been specifically treated for the process. Litho is based on the fact that oil and water don’t mix. The plate is dampened with “water” and the image area repels the “water”; but is attracted to the background or non printing area.The ink is then rolled over the whole plate surface. Where there is “water” the oil based ink will not adhere and where the plate is dry the ink sticks to the surface or image area. The plate is impressed against a rubber “blanket” and from there the image is impressed against the paper. This is where “offset” Lithography comes from. This is required because the paper would wear out the plate if it was impressed directly onto the paper.
